Environment Agency launches search for company believed to have dumped chemical down drain
Environment Agency officials said today they suspected a factory connected to metal production was to blame for a leak of cyanide that poisoned thousands of fish in the river Trent.
The cyanide entered a Severn Trent Water treatment plant at Strongford, Staffordshire, after being released into the public sewers. The chemical killed bacteria that process the sewage, causing a discharge of cyanide and partially treated waste into the river.
